Nice New Yorkers?

Im here to debunk that myth that New Yorkers are the nastiest, meanest people that you will ever cross paths with. In fact, I think we are exactly the opposite. However, since my return to the city, this has become even more apparent.
We give all those annoying tourists directions despite the fact that I am not a walking map or kiosk, we give up our seats on the subway to those who need it more, and I may even bend over to pick something up that you have dropped.
When we hold open a door, we get a thank you in return. On a side note: a held the door for a man with a larger stroller at Saks in Beverly Hills...he didnt say a single word. No thank you, no acknowledgement at all. I would have rather slammed it in his face.

But what has solidified my belief that us New Yorkers are a lot nicer than we are given credit for?? Many people have strangely been complementing my appearance. I leave for 3 weeks, return and people are telling me "i look great" ,"youre teeth are so white" "your tan is great". I beg to differ with these people, but hey, a few compliments never hurt anyone, right??

Im in it for the Fun

At a recent meeting pertaining to a magazine I'm involved with, a colleague brought up a recent article that she had read. The article was a blogger's discussion on why they blog and what motivates them. A very great point was made within the article.

"If you're going to take this so seriously, go to industry insiders"

With that said, I write this blog for fun, about topics i like- new places, travel, and fashion. I never claimed to be an expert on creating an outfit, for example. Perhaps a GQ column would be more appropriate if thats what you are seeking. To me, thats what blogging is all about: fun.

I hope you can all join me and see the fun instead of taking everything a tad bit too seriously.

Remember, Its The Little Things

I've recently been reminded of the cliche saying "its the little things in life that mean the most"...I guess it may actually be true. As we get caught up in our own lives, I find that we tend to get caught up in ourselves as well, forgetting those around. Family, friends, acquaintances. As we are all starting to slip into work and school mode from the end of summer, I find that this begins to happen all too easily.

Living in a place that can sometimes feel like the most lonely place on the world, I frequently find myself being reminded of the importance of those people most closely around you. What are the little things that can make a difference. For me, at least, it may be a random text that says "hey! how have you been?!" or "hope all is well!", a smile when you pass on the street, your friends know when somethings wrong- when they ask are you ok it makes that much of a difference, or what about that random person that gives you a compliment?

You may be asking whats the point of this little rant of sorts- I just encourage you to be aware of people that are important in your life and do not take them for granted. The next time you get that vibe that something may be bothering your friend, ask them if they're okay. Maybe go out on a limb and surprise someone with a nice text.

Sometimes it really is the small things that can make quite a big difference....give it a try

So long Irene, Hello Change of Plans

I'd like to give a huge, pushing you out the door quickly type of goodbye to Irene. I hope I never have to hear the name Irene again...for a really long time. If I do, I might just have a really unpredictable reaction. While I did have fun with Irene on twitter, thats about where the extent of fun ended.

I was supposed to be moving back to NYC today, and that got cancelled as of yesterday at 2:30...so much notice right? The amount of e-mails I was receiving during the storm from school was highly annoying, and looking back these e-mails were also highly misleading. There were many sent between the one that said move-in might be pushed back and the final one changing the plans. These messages in between had no mention of a change of plans. Sorry to say, but myself and my working parents do not just sit around waiting for an institution to delegate our plans...besides the fact that vacation hours come in limited numbers.

Needless to say, I am pretty angry. While we did not loose power or anything major like that, this "change of plans" has just added a large amount of stress and inconvenience to an already stressful week. I mainly blame this decision on the media that hyped of this storm beyond belief. I was not surprised at all when it was far less severe than they predicted.....but they get paid to do this?

On a closing note, my friend and I discussed that when we think of an Irene, we think of permed hair, smeared lipstick, and should pads. How do you envision Irene?

Now is the perfect time to remember this famous little poster:

Perspectives on Jealousy

This is my little public service announcement of sorts. My thoughts and, perhaps, subpar advice on jealousy.

Jealousy is a very strong thing- be cautious. It is something that lurks in one's life and slowly consumes relationships- friendships and those more personal.
People get jealous of us if we have nice things- materialistic jealousy or of our success in careers, ect.
Although you are not the one that is jealous, jealousy has a funny way of sneaking into your life and affecting your negatively if you are surrounded by jealous individuals.

Why cant people, instead, be happy for one's success and congratulate them. To me, it seems a lot easier and it does not slowly person someone out of your life. No negative things- gossip, rumors, back stabbing would occur if people could just be happy for their friends.

Oscar Wilde Knows Best

It's time for a mini rant....

If there is anything I dislike (actually I dislike quite a lot of things) it is non-response from someone or being obviously ignored. When this is a good "friend" it makes it that much worse because we begin thinking are we actually friends or aren't we?

From past experiences, I noticed that when this behavior becomes noticeable its a foreshadowing of whats to come- a slow separation and drifting apart. Obviously this is something that can be semi difficult to come to terms with, especially when you aren't the one initiating this ignorance.

It's even easier to catch someone doing this because of Twitter, Facebook ect. Im a pretty smart person, so one's stupidity slyness is easily caught. This issue characterizes people of today, namely they are too afraid to say anything in person. If you want to drift apart- just tell me. I will initially, most likely, be offended but I'd rather you just tell me than kill a friendship with painful, slow, death.

I turn to one of my favorite authors, Oscar Wilde. His novels have amazing messages, and even more inspiring quotes

He writes, "Some cause happiness wherever they go; other whenever they go" - perhaps this is true...we may be better off without someone, but facing that fact often proves to be very difficult.

and the best thing that Wilde ever wrote, in my opinion:

"There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about"

I try to keep that in mind whenever you hear things about yourself you would rather not know was being said- at least im giving them something to talk about right??
